Barney shines as Jays win Spring Training Opener

CLEARWATER, Fla. - While the city of Toronto was bracing for a snow storm, the Toronto Blue Jays began their quest to repeat as American League Champions in Clearwater, Florida.

Spring Training kicked off with the Jays resting most of their starters for a contest against the Philadelphia Phillies. They would prevail 5-3 over the Phillies lead entirely by Darwin Barney. Barney went 3 for 3 hitting 2 doubles and a single, while cashing in all 5 of the teams RBIs.

Marcus Stroman made his first start of the spring pitching 2 innings, surrendering 3 hits, striking out 1, and giving up 2 earned runs. He also committed an error. Stroman was credited with the win, his first of the spring schedule.

Gregory Infante was credited with the loss for the Phillies, while Wade Leblanc got the save for the Blue Jays. Drew Hutchinson relieved Stroman pitching 2 innings and surrendering the Phillies third run, a solo homer off the bat of former Jay, JP Arencibia.

The Blue Jays will play their second game of the Grapefruit League schedule tomorrow in a rematch against the Phillies as R.A. Dickey takes to the mound.
